CB Sherlock combines her love of nature, wordplay and unique book structures. She creates work that reflects the world around her, capturing the brilliant or the harsh moments of nature, visually layering her art with text and image. She works on the press, intuitively adding color, shape, and words. It is a recipe: add language, nature imagery and the expressive book structure, each time bringing the components together in new arrangements.
With time on Point Reyes in CA, I fell in love with the gnarly giants that posed on the landscape. Drawing these statuesque trees was imperative. Humans and trees are constantly competing for space, especially the Monterey Cypress.
This is my second small drum leaf book of sketches, and is printed on Rives BFK paper with MaryHark indigo paper insert.

A Book created by CB Sherlock.
This book is a result of several years exploring the Yellowstone River and reflecting on my lifelong connection to it. I would travel along the river, stopping at fishing access points where I'd take photos, draw the river shoreline, look at the colors, and experience the sun overhead. Back at my studio I figured out the correct paper, brush, and pens before drawing each location. With the drawings I started writing. I started with words like KINSHIP, ENVIRONMENT, AND CHARACTER. Each word inspired a vignette, a tale about the river, or just a fact about me that had brought me back to this river again and again. I had ten drawings in the end, ten stories.
Turning these into a book was originally overwhelming. So I decided to make a smaller project. Use one drawing, but several stories that would fit together. The book, Finally, is the result. The center page is one of the first drawings of the yellow sandstone bluff along the Yellowstone River. I divided my chosen text into four parts. Two layouts are the first and third sections with text, sun motifs, and handwritten text to alluding to the river of the primary image. It is a book of the shoreline, the water, and the brilliant sun.

After reading this book, people ask, who is Rose? Rose was one of my favorite friends who shared my love of Montana and the Yellowstone River. This love that I shared is what has continually brought me back to the Yellowstone River year after year.

Garden Remnants is a suite of three prints. They reflect how sheltering-in-place opens eyes to the surrounding things usually overlooked.
In the year of Covid, everyone was asked to quarantine themselves. As I did this I looked to objects around me for inspiration. I was drawn to items left behind in the garden, the old Hosta leaves, and in my studio, the metal type from last year’s project. The leaves were hydrated, laminated and using a chine colle´ technique, they were printed on Rives BFK under picked-through type from another project.
They are housed in a linen covered portfolio.

The wildwood, where Dialogue: A Midsummer Night’s Dream takes place, is an entity of its own. Here, CB Sherlock experiences fairies over and over again; Literary nonsense. The forest is the set of the play---the trees abound. Dragonflies, June beetles, butterflies and fireflies flit through the pages as the fairies flit through the play.

CB Sherlock’s attention was caught by the dry humor and politically inclined poeticism of Ann Filemyr. Her poem, The Vowels: A Congregation of Preachers invites laugher, contemplation and a wake up call to the power within each unique individual and to be found within our communities.
